Look Toward “The North Star"

Rochester, New York

2018

This piece references the Fredrick Douglas publication "The North Star", an independently published antislavery newspaper that was published in Rochester, New York. This piece is an encouraging reminder for our youth to not become complacent in their politics. The occupation of literary, educational, and political knowledge is necessary for social change. It is a true exercise in freedom. Each one of the stars from the mural are from quilt starts that acted as codes to find the northern passage to Canada as part of the Underground Railroad.
