Maawed Miijim (The One Who Provides)

Lansing, Michigan

2018

This piece was completed during my residency at MSU, for the Women of Color Initiative. This residency supported my process in creating a work that was derived from conversations with the Indigenous and migrant community of Lansing. I was honored to spend time sharing stories and conversations with Elders Alphonse Pitawanakwat, Joe Weber and Lansing for Cesar Chavez. This work is centered around the act of strawberry and berry picking, a necessary and labor intensive act that provides us with beautiful nourishment from the earth. Strawberries, once abundant here, are sacred to the Anishinaabe, acting as a symbol for the heart. Respectively, the migrant farm workers in this region pick these berries as one of the major agricultural crops providing the rest of the nation with this fruit. I want to recognize a deep reverance for this action, for it's through action that we provide, and when we provide we give our heart.
